City walking tourAnnually about 14.000 visitors are shown around the historical citycentre by guides provided by Gilde Amersfoort. Always included in the waking tours are a visit to the “Koppelpoort” (coupled gate) and the Muurhuizen (wallhouses). The Koppelpoort is a combined water and landgate and is unique in the Netherlands. You are invited to set into motion the treadmills and in doing so lift the 2000 kilogram heavy watershield. The Muurhuizen have been built on the foundation of the first citywall after completion of the second citywall in the 15th century. They form a circle around the citycentre and include many beautiful old buildings. The historical citycentre (600 x 400 meters) contains 380 national and 275 urban monuments, amongst which a very old synagogue (dating back to 1727). The city tour may be extended- at an extra charge- by inclusion of a visit to the “Mannenzaal” ( men’s ward) which is unique for Europe. In this Mannenzaal senior men lived upto 1907. They slept in cupboard –beds, occasionally 2 men had to share one bed! Duration of the city walking tour about 1,5 to 2 hours.
